Wyoming Gas Injection Initiative

Revitalize Wyoming's oilfields while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Revitalizing Oil Fields

Cutting-Edge Techniques to Boost Recovery and Reduce Emissions

Discover Wyoming Gas Injection Initiative's (WGII) field pilot testing of advanced enhanced oil recovery technologies in Wyoming. This initiative aims to revitalize oil fields while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, featuring laboratory-scale de-risking with site-specific samples at UW's Center of Innovation for Flow through Porous Media (COIFPM).

WGII has been approved to receive $47,000,000 matching funds from the State of Wyoming to implement, in close collaboration with Oil and Gas Operators, multiple Field Pilot Projects in the State of Wyoming over two phases. The initiative involves field pilot testing of advanced enhanced oil recovery technologies such as foam-assisted gas injection using recovered hydrocarbon gases, carbon dioxide, or other gases for revitalization of oil fields as well as mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions by operations in the State.

It also includes laboratory-scale de-risking of the recovery schemes, both research and technical services using site-specific rock and fluid samples under relevant field operation conditions, at COIFPM of the University of Wyoming in close collaboration with the Dow Chemical Company.

We answer important questions at atomic, nano, micro and macro scales which enhance understanding that translates to production gains at the wellhead. The state of Wyoming and outstanding corporate partners built COIFPM. I’m ecstatic to see our world-class team and UW technology innovation shine as we partner with top companies here at home.

WGII

Phase 1

Phase 1 was approved to receive $25 million in matching funds from the State. These funds will be used to match, dollar-for-dollar, the project contributions committed by the Operators and Dow on a project-specific basis. The Request for Proposal (RFP) for Phase 1 opened on June 15, 2023, and closed on October 13, 2023.

WGII

Phase 2

The RFP for Phase-2 is scheduled to open on November 15, 2024 for a period of four months. All Operators with at least one currently producing field in the State that have the capability to partner in cutting-edge research and development to enhance the output and recovery efficiency of the State’s existing oil fields are eligible to submit their proposals.
